Mysore Trip(Day 2)


The next day we listed the places to visit and started to Srirangapatna. There are no. of buses to reach Sriranga. You need to catch another bus from bus stand/ can go by walk which comprises 1.5 km from bus stand.

Ranganatha Swamy Temple:

Sthalapuranam: Tradition holds that all the islands formed in the Kaveri River are consecrated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, and large temples have been built in very ancient times dedicated to that deity on the three largest islands. These three towns, which constitute the main pilgrimage centers dedicated to Ranganathaswamy, are:

Tippu' Sulthan Fort & Jamia Masjid, Tippu's Death Place:

Sthalapuranam:
Srirangapatna was the scene of the last and decisive battle fought between Tipu Sultan and a combined force of 50,000 men provided equally by the Nizam of Hyderabad and the East India Company under the overall command of General George Harris. This battle was the last engagement of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. The Battle of Seringapatam, 1799, was truly momentous in its historic effects.
At the battle's climax, Tipu Sultan was killed within the fort of Seringapatam, betrayed by one of his own confidants; the spot where he ultimately fell is marked by a memorial. For the last time in history, Seringapatam had been the scene of political change in the Sultanate of Mysore.

How to Reach: Buses available from KSRTC bus stand to Srirangapatna Bus stand and then reach Fort to another bus. It is very near to the Ranganatha Swamy Temple.

Nearby Places: Darya Daulath, Gumbaz Fort, Brindhavanam.

First start with the Jamia Masjid, Tippu's Death Place and then to the Fort.














St. Philomena's Church:

Sthalapuranam : A church at the same location was built in 1843 by Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. An inscription which was there at the time of laying the foundation of the present church in 1933 states: "In the name of that only God - the universal Lord who creates, protects, and reigns over the universe of Light, the mundane world and the assemblage of all created lives - this church is built 1843 years after the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Enlightenment of the World, as man". In 1926, Sir T. Thumboo Chetty who was the Huzur Secretary to the Maharaja of Mysore, Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar obtained a relic of the Saint from Peter Pisani, Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies. This relic was handed over to Father Cochet who approached the king to assist him in constructing a church in honour of St. Philomena. The Maharaja of Mysore laid the foundation stone of the church on October 28, 1933.

Government Sandal Factory(Mysore Sandal Soaps):

Sthalapuranam: The main motivation for setting up the factory was the excessive sandalwood reserves that the Mysore Kingdom had which could not be exported to Europe because of the First World War.[1] In 1980, KSDL was incorporated as a company by merging the Government Soap Factory with the sandal oil factories at Shimoga and Mysore.[2] Mysore Sandal Soap is the only soap in the world made from 100% pure sandalwood oil.[1] KSDL owns a proprietary Geographical indication (GI) tag on the Mysore sandal soap which gives it intellectual property rights to use the brand name, to ensure quality and also prevent piracy and unauthorised use by other manufacturers.

Highlights:  The natural oil extracted from the Sandal wood, which will be used in the Soaps manufacturing.
